From September 8 to 11, a delegation of the Group of Strategic Vision (GSV) “Russia—Islamic World,” comprising Farit Mukhametshin, Adviser to the Group’s Chair, and Airat Akhmetov, Head of the Group’s International Relations Department, is taking part in the 39th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The conference, organized by the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought, brings together representatives from more than 30 countries.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian took part in the opening day, emphasizing in his remarks that “unity and solidarity among Muslims are the key to resisting oppression,” noting that divisions only encourage Israel to commit new crimes in Gaza and across the region. He stressed that the real problem does not lie with Israel or the United States, but with divisions among Muslims themselves. “If the Islamic community were united, no power would dare infringe upon the rights of Muslims,” the Iranian president said. More than 20 representatives of the clergy and of religious and public organizations from a number of countries spoke at the opening ceremony.
At the plenary session, Farit Mukhametshin delivered an address outlining the goals, tasks, and activities of the GSV “Russia—Islamic World” and the Group’s active cooperation with countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, highlighting the important role of Dr. Hamid Shahriari, Secretary-General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought.
At the evening session of the Conference, Iran’s Foreign Minister Dr. Abbas Araghchi addressed participants, setting out the Islamic Republic’s diplomatic steps to help consolidate Muslim countries in defending the rights and freedoms of Palestinians and calling for further intensification and strengthening of support for the Palestinian cause.
The participation of Russian representatives drew strong interest; members of the delegation gave interviews to Iran’s national television and to several local and international news agencies.
