UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regrets the "lack of political understanding of the way forward" in Sudan following the resignation of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, Secretary-General's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said on Monday.

"The Secretary-General has taken note of the resignation of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok," the UN press service quoted Dujarric as saying. - "He regrets the lack of political understanding to move forward despite the gravity of the situation in Sudan. The Secretary-General calls on all stakeholders to continue an agreement-oriented dialogue in order to achieve an inclusive, peaceful and durable solution. The hopes of the Sudanese for a transition that leads to democratic liberation are critical. The UN stands ready to support these efforts."

Guterres condemned the violence against protesters and called on security forces in Sudan "to exercise the utmost restraint and comply with obligations to ensure the rights to freedom of assembly and expression".
