The Palestinian movement Hamas has conveyed its readiness to discuss a potential prisoner exchange with Israel, only after a permanent ceasefire is established in the Gaza Strip. This announcement comes in response to Israel's proposal for a two-month ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.
"The primary condition is a permanent ceasefire, not a temporary one. Only after achieving this will other matters such as the exchange of prisoners and the resumption of humanitarian aid be considered," stated Hamas spokesman Walid Kilani to Anadolu Agency.
Recent reports from CNN suggested that Israel had proposed allowing Hamas leaders to leave the Gaza Strip as part of a potential new ceasefire agreement. However, it was noted that Hamas was unlikely to agree to such terms.
The situation in the Middle East escalated sharply when Hamas fighters infiltrated into Israel on October 7, 2023. The movement explained the attack as a response to Israeli actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Subsequently, Israel imposed a complete blockade on the Gaza Strip, launching strikes against it and parts of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes also erupted in the West Bank.
