The Palestinian group Hamas is reportedly preparing to dispatch a delegation to Cairo on June 4 for discussions regarding a proposed prisoner exchange deal with Israel. This information, according to The Times of Israel, comes from unnamed sources.
Two officials have corroborated this report to the newspaper. The publication notes that Hamas recently gave a favorable reception to remarks made by US President Joe Biden concerning the proposed agreement, although the group has not yet issued a formal response.
President Biden recently outlined the framework of a new peace proposal comprising three stages. The initial phase, spanning six weeks, envisions a comprehensive ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza's urban centers, and a prisoner swap involving the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for the liberation of numerous Palestinian detainees from Israeli jails. Concurrently, this phase calls for the commencement of negotiations, with the ceasefire remaining in force until a mutual understanding is achieved.
The second stage of the proposal focuses on securing the release of all remaining captives, including military personnel. The final phase involves the rebuilding of the Gaza Strip and the repatriation of deceased Israeli soldiers' remains to their families.
