Hamas Regards Resistance to Israel as a Legitimate Palestinian Right of Self-Defense

08 December 2023

Hamas asserts that engaging in armed confrontation with Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip constitutes the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to defend themselves and their land. The organization issued a special statement in commemoration of the anniversary of the 1987 Palestinian Intifada (uprising).

"Resistance to the Israeli army in Gaza is the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to defend themselves, their land, and holy places, and is a continuation of the Palestinian uprisings against the [Israeli] occupation," the statement emphasized. It highlights that the ongoing armed clashes in the Strip are directed at "confronting [Israel's] aggression and thwarting its plans to Judaize and settle Palestinian lands."

Hamas believes that the ongoing military operation by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip has failed to achieve any results or goals. The movement asserts that "during more than two months of aggression unleashed by Israel in the Gaza Strip, the occupation [Israeli] forces have failed to achieve any results or set goals in the face of Palestinian resilience and resistance units."

Hamas reiterates its rejection of "any plans to normalize or settle relations with the occupation regime, which poses a real threat to security and stability around the world." The movement calls on Arab and Islamic countries to "continue the movement of solidarity with the Gaza Strip, supporting the justice of the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."
