The Palestinian movement Hamas says it is ready to offer Israel a ceasefire or truce lasting five, seven, or ten years as part of broader efforts to resolve the conflict and move toward establishing an independent Palestinian state. The statement came from Hamas political bureau member Basem Naim.
“This involves, first of all, completing the initial phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for the Gaza Strip, and second, launching a political process that would ultimately lead to an independent Palestinian state. Throughout this period, we are ready to agree to a five-, seven-, or ten-year ceasefire or truce,” Naim said in an interview with Associated Press.
Naim added that Hamas is open to a “comprehensive approach” in talks with Israel to prevent further escalation or renewed fighting. Without offering specifics, he noted that the group is prepared to consider “laying down or freezing its weapons.” He also stressed that any agreements reached must include reliable security arrangements that would “allow Palestinians to defend themselves if they are attacked.”
On December 5, Al Arabiya reported, citing sources, that the parties involved in the Gaza conflict — together with mediators — had agreed on initial steps toward disarming Hamas, including the removal of the group’s heavy weapons.
