Hamas Supports Creation of Technocrat Committee to Govern Gaza

22 January

The Palestinian movement Hamas has agreed to a proposal to establish a technocrat committee in Gaza to handle administrative matters, oversee the enclave's reconstruction, manage humanitarian aid delivery, and organize elections, Khaled Qaddumi, Hamas’s official representative in Iran, told TASS.

“We have agreed to the proposal to form an administrative committee of technocrats that will take on the management of reconstruction efforts in the enclave, facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid for our people in Gaza, and pave the way for elections,” said Qaddumi. He added that, to date, “Hamas’s civilian forces, including the police, have been handling humanitarian aid delivery and ensuring that it reaches those in need.”

“We are open to anyone who seeks to rebuild this country within the framework of a shared national vision. This includes temporary governance in Gaza and a permanent government for all Palestinians, formed through elections and unification,” the Hamas representative stated. He emphasized Hamas’s belief in Palestinian unity and partnership, which he described as essential for governing the entire region. According to al-Qaddumi, Gaza cannot exist in isolation from Palestine and the West Bank, just as “there is no Palestine without Gaza.”

In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew its forces from Gaza and evacuated Jewish settlements as part of its disengagement plan. Control of Gaza was subsequently handed to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), led by Mahmoud Abbas, which also governed the West Bank. However, Hamas won the first Palestinian parliamentary elections, leading to a confrontation with the more moderate Fatah faction and a split between the two groups. Hamas seized full control of Gaza, while its rivals retained authority over the West Bank.

Recently, Abbas and his allies have reiterated their desire to restore PNA jurisdiction over Gaza, though Hamas has yet to agree to such an arrangement.
