The President of the International Court of Justice, Nawaf Salam, who has been nominated for the position of Lebanon’s Prime Minister, has reportedly gained the support of 63 out of 128 members of parliament during consultations held by President Joseph Aoun with parliamentary factions. This was revealed by a source in the presidential Baabda Palace to a TASS correspondent.
“Nawaf Salam has secured sufficient votes and may be appointed to head Lebanon’s new government,” the source noted. According to him, Salam has received backing from two major Christian blocs, in addition to Sunni factions.
Previously, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati was believed to have the strongest chances of assuming the position.
