Imran Khan, Former Pakistani Prime Minister, Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for Corruption

31 January

A Pakistani court has handed down a 14-year prison term to the country's former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Movement for Justice party, Imran Khan, along with his wife, Bushra Bibi. This decision was made in relation to a corruption case involving the illicit sale of foreign gifts, as reported by the Dawn newspaper.

Previously, Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special court for breaching the state secrets law.

Khan served as the head of Pakistan's cabinet from 2018 to 2022. His tenure ended abruptly on April 10, 2022, following a vote of no confidence against him.

The investigation into Khan's activities commenced after he publicly asserted on March 27, 2022, that he had received an encrypted telegram from Pakistan's ambassador to Washington, D.C. According to Khan, the message indicated that US representatives had recommended the removal of the prime minister due to his pro-Russian stance on Ukraine, which he allegedly displayed during his visit to Moscow in February 2022.
