In Tunisia, the Number of Presidential Candidates Increases to Four

27 August

The former Tunisian Minister of Health, Abdellatif Mekki, who was previously a member of the leadership of the moderate Islamist Ennahda Movement (Renaissance Party), has been approved to participate in the presidential elections scheduled for October 6, 2024. This decision was made by the Administrative Court (AC) after Mekki's initial candidacy was rejected. Following an appeal, the AC accepted Mekki's case both in form and substance, as reported by Mosaïque FM radio station.

With this ruling, Mekki has become the fourth candidate in the presidential race. The other candidates include former MPs Zouhair Maghzaoui and Ayachi Zammel, as well as the current head of state, Kais Saied.

Mekki has been active in politics and public life since the 1980s, holding roles such as secretary general of the General Union of Tunisian Students, member of parliament, and member of the government.

The last presidential elections in Tunisia were held in the fall of 2019. In that election, Kais Saied, running as an independent candidate, won the second round with 72.71% of the votes against Nabil Karoui, who represented the centrist party Heart of Tunisia. Saied took office on October 23, 2019.
