20 September 2021

Indonesia and Russia are working on Russian president Vladimir Putin's visit to the 2022 Group of twenty (G20) summit, Indonesian Council of representatives (upper house of parliament) deputy chairman Nono Sampono told reporters following a meeting with Federation Council deputy speaker Konstantin Kosachev on Monday.

"We have agreed with the Russian side on a six-point program that will continue and develop inter-parliamentary cooperation between our countries. One of the most important points of the program is the visit of the Federation Council leadership to Indonesia as well as preliminary preparation for Russian president Vladimir Putin's visit to Indonesia within the G20 summit next year," he said.

Indonesia looks forward to further developing defense cooperation with Russia, Sampono pointed out.

"We also hope to further develop defense cooperation. As you know, the Indonesian side buys a considerable amount of military equipment from Russia to improve its comprehensive security system. We hope that this cooperation will develop further," the Indonesian politician said.

In addition, he pointed out that "there is some aggravation of the political and military situation in the South China Sea at the moment." "I would like to note that the Indonesian side continues to be committed to stability in this region. And will maintain stability and security, hopefully with help and support from the Russian side as well," Sampono added. - There is also some aggravation in the Indian Ocean. Indonesia will continue to work to strengthen the security of the region.
