The Indonesian Armed Forces command is considering various scenarios for recovering the sunken Nanggala submarine, including drawing on Russia’s experience with the Kursk nuclear submarine cruiser, which sank in august 2000 in the Barents Sea. According to Detik news portal, it was stated by Deputy Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Rear Admiral Muhammad Ali on Tuesday at a press conference.

According to him, ‘Indonesia could use the Russian experience, for instance, in lifting the ship in parts’. ‘We are discussing different plans’, Rear Admiral said. The Deputy Chief of Staff did not rule out that ‘Indonesia would need help from other states, as it did in the Russian Federation’.

‘A significant problem for the operation could be the depth, at which the submarine is located – about 850 m’, Muhammad Ali noted.

The Nanggala diesel submarine was taking part in maneuvers in the Bali Sea. After losing contact with it, Indonesia launched a search and rescue operation. On 25 April, the wreckage of the submarine was found at the depth of around 850 m near the island of Bali. All 53 crew members died.
