Indonesia is studying the possibility of creating an OPEC-style structure for countries mining nickel and other minerals used for batteries. Bahlil Lahadalia, the country's investment minister, said this in an interview with the Financial Times published Monday.
"I do see the merit of creating OPEC to manage the governance of oil trade to ensure predictability for potential investors and consumers. Indonesia is studying the possibility to form a similar governance structure with regard to the minerals we have, including nickel, cobalt and manganese," the politician said.
He specified that Jakarta is still working on the structure of the future organization and has not yet approached other nickel mining countries with this proposal.
As the newspaper notes, the country has a quarter of the world's nickel reserves and is a leader in mining the metal. Russia, Canada and Australia also have significant positions in nickel mining.
