Indonesian authorities expressed their interest in joining BRICS during the BRICS Plus outreach session at the 16th summit of the organization. This was announced in a statement published on the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
“Indonesia has expressed its desire to join BRICS during the BRICS Plus meeting in Kazan,” the statement read. Foreign Minister Sugiono explained, “Joining BRICS reflects our independent foreign policy. This does not mean aligning with any particular bloc; we are committed to actively participating in all formats.”
Sugiono also noted that BRICS priorities align well with Indonesia’s governmental agendas, particularly in areas like food and energy security, poverty eradication, and human resource development. He emphasized that through BRICS, Indonesia aims to spotlight "the shared interests of developing nations and the Global South."
The 16th BRICS summit, a significant event under Russia’s chairmanship, was held in Kazan from October 22 to 24. On the second day of the summit, the participants adopted the Kazan Declaration, addressing key issues such as the expansion of the bloc, global challenges, and regional crises, including those in Ukraine and the Middle East.
