Indonesia Voices Support for Palestine's UN Membership

04 April

Indonesia has expressed its backing for Palestine's quest to attain full membership in the United Nations and calls upon other nations to rally behind this cause, according to the republic's foreign ministry.

"Jakarta not only wholeheartedly supports Palestine's pursuit of UN membership but also urges numerous countries to extend their support," stated an Indonesian foreign ministry spokesperson, as quoted by The Jakarta Post.

"We have been steadfast in these endeavors for some time now," the spokesperson informed the publication, emphasizing that the recognition of Palestinian statehood remains a cornerstone of Indonesia's foreign policy, as highlighted by the Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, Dmitriy Polyanskiy, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, had affirmed Russia's backing for Palestine's aspiration to resume the process of seeking full UN membership.

A letter penned by Palestine's permanent observer to the UN, Riyad Mansour, and disclosed by TASS, includes a plea to recommence deliberations on the application before the UN Security Council in April 2024. Additionally, the Palestinian diplomatic mission appended letters of endorsement for Palestine's UN membership bid from the Arab group of states within the organization, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement. The missive also included a list of 140 states that have already recognized Palestine as an independent state.

In 2011, Palestine initially sought full UN membership but subsequently opted to maintain its status as a permanent observer temporarily.
