Indonesian Authorities Agree to Meet Some Demands of Protesting Workers

29 August

Indonesia’s government has agreed to address several key demands raised by labor unions during recent protests outside the country’s parliament in central Jakarta, Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi told the Jakarta Globe.

According to Hadi, President Prabowo Subianto has approved the formation of a task force to handle layoffs and a new council focused on occupational safety. “The president agreed to these two initiatives, and they will be put into action,” the minister said.

However, he did not confirm whether the government would meet union demands for a higher minimum wage.

On August 28, several thousand union members staged a large protest outside the parliament building, calling for higher wages, an end to mass layoffs, and tax reform among other demands.
