Indonesian police have detained more than 300 protesters during mass demonstrations outside the country’s parliament building in central Jakarta, the Jakarta Globe reported.
According to the newspaper, a total of 312 demonstrators were taken into custody, including 205 minors—among them secondary school and university students. All were brought to Jakarta police headquarters for questioning.
Preliminary information from law enforcement indicates that underage protesters will receive formal warnings, while the remaining detainees are expected to face legal proceedings.
Monday’s rally drew thousands of protesters to the parliamentary complex with a range of demands, including urgent passage of a law on confiscating corrupt officials’ assets, abolishing high legislative allowances, and even dissolving the parliament itself. Tempo magazine reported that organizers also called for an investigation into alleged corruption involving family members of former President Joko Widodo (2014-2024) and the resignation of his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, from the vice presidency.
The Jakarta Globe noted that the protests turned confrontational in the afternoon, with clashes lasting into the night. Police began making arrests after hundreds of demonstrators attempted to breach the gates of the parliamentary complex. Some threw rocks at officers, who responded with tear gas.
