Indonesian President stresses that ASEAN can't advocate for particular country

14 July 2023

During the ASEAN meetings held in Jakarta, Indonesian President Joko Widodo delivered a powerful message emphasizing that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should not prioritize the interests of any specific country. President Widodo's remarks, broadcasted on the official YouTube channel of the Indonesian presidential administration, underscored the need for ASEAN to uphold international law consistently and work towards unity and strength for the preservation of peace and stability in the region.

In his address, President Widodo referenced an Indonesian saying that promotes achieving victory without seeking approval or humiliating others. He called for mutual respect and cooperation among ASEAN member states.

Indonesia, currently holding the ASEAN presidency in 2023, is hosting a week-long series of events. The gathering began with a four-day meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Jakarta. The upcoming East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Security Forum, to be attended by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, are anticipated to focus on promoting Russian interests in the Asia-Pacific region while advocating for a balanced, equitable, and responsive regional architecture of interstate relations.

Founded in 1967, ASEAN brings together ten member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
