Indonesia's Ulema Council calls for "sending to hell" US aid after criticism of new laws

Deputy head of Indonesia's Ulema Council Anwar Abbas, in response to criticism of the country's new criminal code by American Ambassador Sung Kim, quoted Indonesia's first president of independent Indonesia Sukarno and called for" sending to hell" US aid and investment. VOA report son Wednesday.

Indonesia's parliament on Tuesday passed draft amendments to the criminal code that have been criticized by human rights activists. The document would, among other things, penalize for having an extramarital affair, criticizing the president, expressing views against "national ideology," blasphemy, and others.

According to Abbas, criticizing the law, Sung Kim said that its passage, which affects LGBT rights in particular, could harm the investment climate in Indonesia. Abbas said the US ambassador's statements were "threatening in that they show that the US wants to force the Indonesian people to tolerate LGBT people." "If the Indonesian government does not want to follow these views, they will not invest in Indonesia," he added.

"If the US continues to impose its attitudes and views, then, to quote Sukarno, we should say, "Go to hell with your aid"," Abbas concluded.

In the 1960s, as anti-American sentiment grew in Indonesia, the US cut off aid after Jakarta refused to settle the conflict with Malaysia. In a speech, Sukarno, considered a national hero in Indonesia, uttered the famous phrase that later became famous: "Go to hell with your aid!"
