Iran, together with China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus, has presented a draft resolution at the 69th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference prohibiting all forms of attacks or threats against nuclear facilities. Iran’s Foreign Ministry representative Esmail Baghaei announced the initiative.
“To protect the integrity of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Iran, along with China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus, submitted a draft resolution ‘On the prohibition of all forms of attack and threats of attack on nuclear facilities and infrastructure under the Agency’s comprehensive safeguards agreements,’” Baghaei stated.
The draft calls on all states to refrain from attacks or threats of attack against peaceful nuclear facilities in other countries. It further affirms the “inalienable right to peaceful nuclear energy development” and “the right to effective guarantees against any attacks or threats of attack”.
