Iran Outlines Conditions for Cooperation with Syria's New Leadership

09 December 2024

Iran has set clear conditions for engaging with Syria's new leadership: renouncing support for terrorism, respecting the rights of Syrian Shias, and distancing itself from Israel. This was stated by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

"Our cooperation with those who will govern Damascus depends on their behavior and policies toward the Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria’s Shia population, as well as their distance from the Zionist regime (referring to Israel — TASS) and terrorist groups," the diplomat said during an interview with Iran's state broadcasting network.

Araghchi acknowledged the challenges of uniting various factions and clans on the future government of Syria but expressed Iran's commitment to supporting the process. "We support this effort because we want the will of the Syrian people to prevail," he emphasized.
