Iran plans to build a nuclear desalination plant

15 August 2022

Iranian authorities are planning to use two new power units of the nuclear power plant in Bushehr to operate a seawater desalination plant, Press TV informed on Sunday evening.

According to Bushehr Province Governor Ahmad Mohammadizadeh, the actual implementation of the nuclear desalination plant project will start at the end of August. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran will participate in the construction.

As Press TV notes, the Bushehr NPP in its current state is capable of producing nearly 1 gigawatt per hour of electricity from one reactor that is currently in operation. Currently, this is the only operating NPP in Iran. It was built with the help of the Russian side.

In 2014, Russia and Iran signed an agreement to build two more power units in Bushehr. These, as Press TV notes, are planned to be used, among other things, to supply electricity to desalination plants. According to the plan, they will be able to produce up to 150 thousand cubic meters of fresh water per day.
