Iran, in cooperation with Russia, Qatar and Turkmenistan, plans to create a gas hub in the industrial district of Asaluyeh located in Bushehr province on the northern shore of the Persian Gulf. Oil Minister of the Islamic republic Javad Owji announced this on Wednesday.

"We have the second-largest gas reserves in the world, so we are planning to create a gas hub in Asaluyeh county in cooperation with Russia, Qatar and Turkmenistan," the minister was quoted by Tasnim as saying. Owji did not provide a possible timeline for implementing the project.

Last month, Owji said that Iran and Russia were discussing the development of ten new oil and gas fields in the territory of the Islamic republic. According to him, the Iranian authorities are in talks with Gazprom, the joint projects with which the minister estimated at $40 billion. In particular, Gazprom is considering developing the Kish and North Pars fields with the subsequent project for liquefaction of gas and supply to world markets.

In 2022 the Iranian National Oil Company and Gazprom signed a memorandum on strategic cooperation. The document envisages analysis of cooperation opportunities, including in the following areas: development of Iran's oil and gas fields, natural gas and oil product swap operations, implementation of large- and small-scale LNG projects, construction of gas pipelines, scientific, technical and technological cooperation.

Asaluyeh is the production center of the world's largest oil and gas field North-South Pars, which is located in the central part of the Persian Gulf in the territorial waters of Iran and Qatar. The field's total geological reserves are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and 7.7 billion cubic meters of condensate, with recoverable reserves of 35.6 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and 3 billion cubic meters of condensate.
