Iran Refutes Western Media Claims of 30,000 Dead During Unrest

26 January

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has denied reports from Western media outlets claiming that 30,000 people were killed during recent unrest in the country, labeling the allegations "Hitler-style lies."

"A big, Hitler-style lie: isn't that the number of people they planned to kill on the streets of Iran?!" Baghaei wrote on X. "However, they failed, and now they are trying to forge this in the media. Truly cruel."

The unrest in Iran began on December 29 following street protests triggered by a sharp depreciation of the rial, eventually spreading to most major cities. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, armed terrorists appeared among the demonstrators starting January 8. Tehran has officially blamed Israel and the United States for organizing the disturbances. On January 23, Araghchi reported that the total death toll stood at 3,117, a figure that includes both civilians and members of the security forces.
