Iran to become full-fledged member of SCO in July

01 June 2023

Iran's accession process to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be completed in July, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Thursday.

"We will become a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in July when the next summit of the association takes place," he was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency.

On September 15-16 last year, the SCO summit in Samarkand was attended by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. The Islamic republic signed a memorandum of commitment to obtain the status of a member state of the association.

The next summit will be held July 4 under the chairmanship of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a virtual format. All members will participate in the summit, the Indian foreign ministry said Tuesday. Iran, Belarus and Mongolia have been invited as observers. In addition, Turkmenistan has been invited as a guest.

The declaration on creation of the SCO was signed in Shanghai in June 2001 by the six states, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan are also presently members of the organization. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia are observer states; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey are dialogue partners.
