Iran to keep IAEA cameras turned off until nuclear deal is restored

25 July 2022

Tehran will not activate cameras at its nuclear facilities until a treaty on Iran's nuclear deal is signed, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslam said on Monday. Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said on Monday.

"The cameras installed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after 2015 [at Iranian facilities] will be off until the nuclear deal is renewed," Eslami pointed out, as quoted by Al Hadath TV.

In early June, IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi reported that Iran had notified the IAEA that it was removing 27 of the agency's monitoring cameras from several nuclear facilities. Grossi called this a "serious challenge" to the IAEA's continued ability to confirm that Tehran is complying with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program.

Indirect talks between the US and Iran on restoring the nuclear deal took place in Qatar in late June of this year. At that time, the coordinator of the negotiations, Political Director of the EU External Action Service Enrique Mora stated that the sides failed to achieve the progress they had hoped for. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced that Tehran positively assessed the new round of negotiations held in Doha. According to him, the goal of restoring the deal can be achieved "if the US will be realistic."
