Iran Warns of “Dangerous Consequences” from US Tariffs

14 January

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has warned that US tariffs imposed on countries doing business with Iran could have dangerous consequences for global trade, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said.

In a statement, the ministry cautioned that Washington’s unilateral punitive measures threaten the international trading system and said the United Nations and its bodies — including the secretary-general — bear responsibility for upholding the rule of law at the international level.

Baghaei condemned US sanctions as “illegal and inhumane,” arguing they contradict the principles of the UN Charter and international law, including the foundations of free international trade. He said sanctions that violate the rights of Iranian citizens should be regarded as a “crime against humanity,” and that countries imposing such measures “must be held accountable for the consequences” of what he described as crimes.

“Iran has faced cruel and illegal US sanctions and economic pressure for more than 75 years under various pretexts, which reflects deeply rooted hostility toward Iranian statehood within US political planning and decision-making,” he said.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 25% tariffs on all countries cooperating with Iran.
