06 December 2023

The General Court in Tehran has ordered the US government and 41 individuals and entities to pay $49.7 billion for the assassination of the former commander of the Al-Quds Special Forces of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Qasem Soleimani. This information was reported by the IRNA news agency.

According to the agency, the list of defendants in the case includes former US President Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Defense Secretary Mark Esper, former Chairman of the US Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff Committee Mark Milley, and former US Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Kenneth McKenzie. Additionally, the State Department, the US Departments of Defense and Treasury, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), CENTCOM, and the US Federal Reserve are all directed to pay the imposed fine.

The court has ordered all defendants to issue a public apology by publishing it in one of the most widely read local publications.

A total of at least 3,318 lawsuits were filed in the case, and the court conducted three public hearings before announcing its verdict. The verdict, delivered in absentia, can be appealed within two months.

Qasem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy leader of Iraq's al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces, were killed on January 3, 2020, in a US air force missile attack near Baghdad airport. In response, Iran launched a missile attack on two sites in Iraq on the night of January 8, 2020, which were used by the US military.
