Iranian Foreign Minister to attend BRICS ministerial meeting

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian will participate in a meeting at the level of foreign ministers of BRICS countries to be held on June 1-2 in Cape Town. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs Mehdi Safari announced this on Monday.


"Our foreign minister will participate in this meeting," the deputy minister commented on the BRICS meeting in Cape Town. The Fars news agency quoted him as saying.


The Iranian foreign minister will also hold a series of meetings with representatives of BRICS member countries, Safari specified. He believes that "this is a good opportunity to develop political, economic and security cooperation."


On May 2, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that after joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Tehran decided to apply to BRICS and is preparing to join this group of countries. On May 20, South Africa's Sherpa to BRICS Anil Suklal told TASS that 19 countries were seeking to join the association, 13 of which had filed applications. According to him, BRICS is preparing the concept of the organization's expansion, which will be presented to the heads of foreign ministries in Cape Town.
