Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has expressed concern over the potential for civil war and the disintegration of Syria following the fall of Damascus to armed opposition forces.
"We are closely monitoring developments in Syria and aim to prevent the escalation of fears. These fears include the possibility of a civil or sectarian war, the partial or total collapse of Syria, and its transformation into a haven for terrorists," Araghchi stated during an interview with Iran's state broadcaster.
He also highlighted Iran's concern over recent actions by Israel. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is particularly worried about the abuses of the Zionist regime [referring to Israel — TASS], which took certain actions starting last night," he added.
Araghchi referred to the Israeli army's declared incursion into the buffer zone on the Syrian border, officially announced on December 8. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that the operation was initiated in response to recent developments in Syria and was defensive in nature.
