Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has appointed a new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic by his decree, Tasnim reported on Monday.

According to its information, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, who headed the Strategic Center of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, Iran's elite military units) since 2006, will take Ali Shamkhani's place. Ahmadian is also a full member of the Expediency Discernment Council (a deliberative body in Iran whose responsibility is to resolve disputes between the parliament and the Guardian Council of the Constitution).

The new head of the Supreme National Security Council began his career with the IRGC during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). After the end of the conflict he served first as deputy commander of the IRGC Navy and later as commander of this branch of the Armed Forces. From 2000 to 2007 Ahmadian headed the IRGC Joint Headquarters (disbanded in February 2008).
