Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the attempt by the E3 countries—Britain, Germany, France—to trigger the UN snapback mechanism to reinstate sanctions against Iran lacks any legal basis and merely reflects Europe’s complete submission to US influence.
“Their decision to initiate the reinstatement of Security Council resolutions on Iran is not driven by legal necessity or common sense, but—as US Senator Marco Rubio acknowledged in a press statement on August 28, 2025—it represents their compliance with NSPM-2,” Baghaei wrote on X. (NSPM-2 is the US presidential national security memorandum from February 4, 2025, where President Donald Trump declared a “maximum pressure” policy against Iran.)
Baghaei added that the E3’s actions reveal their adherence to a world order where power alone determines what is right, and the rule-breaker (referring to the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018) sets the rules.
On Thursday, the UK, Germany and France initiated the snapback process. At the same time, they expressed willingness to continue negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program for 30 days to extend UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which lifts sanctions on Iran and expires on October 18.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry called the E3’s move “a provocative and unjustified escalation” and promised to respond “appropriately” to their actions.
