Iran's Potential Inclusion in Interstate Aviation Committee

04 October 2023

Iran is considering the possibility of becoming a member of the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC). This proposal has emerged following discussions with Iranian aviation authorities. The information was shared by Oleg Storchevoy, the Chairman of the IAC, as reported by Izvestia.

"Iranian colleagues have shown interest in becoming part of the agreement. This potential membership will be deliberated upon by the Council of Plenipotentiary Representatives of member states, following which the IAC will proceed to establish the necessary legal framework," stated the IAC chairman.

He also mentioned that the agreement remains open for other countries to join. Iran's potential membership holds promise for enhancing regional cooperation in the realms of flight safety and civil aviation.

The use of shared approaches and a unified regulatory and legal framework for airworthiness, aviation equipment certification, and experience exchange in aviation accident investigation can yield a synergistic effect. This will facilitate more efficient collective utilization of resources by Iran and other IAC member nations for the advancement of the aviation industry, infrastructure, and aircraft manufacturing.

Established in 1991, the Interstate Aviation Committee's responsibilities include investigating aviation accidents and incidents. The Committee played a role in the investigation of the 2015 Kogalymavia Airbus A321 crash in Egypt, which was determined to be a result of a terrorist attack.
