Iran's UN Representative Attributes Current JCPOA State to US and EU Responsibility

19 December 2023

Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Amir Saeed Iravani, following a UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the implementation of Resolution 2231,  said that the responsibility for the current state of the Iranian nuclear deal squarely on the US and the EU, asserting that they have failed to fulfill their obligations.

"Since the previous Security Council meeting, Iran has been consistently working to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). However, despite our efforts, the other parties to the agreement have not taken any visible steps," the ISNA news agency quoted him as saying. - "After the United States unilaterally withdrew from the deal, no one has succeeded in persuading the United States to return to its commitments."

Separately, Iravani addressed the topic of security in the Middle East and emphasized that, contrary to baseless allegations, Iran has consistently demonstrated its commitment to promoting peace in the region. "No individual, group, or country [in the region] acts on Iran's orders, and therefore we are not responsible for anyone's actions," the Iranian envoy added.

In 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany with Iran to address the crisis over Tehran's nuclear developments. Former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018. The current US President, Joe Biden, has expressed willingness to rejoin the nuclear deal, but negotiations to fully restore the JCPOA have faced challenges. In November 2022, Biden privately acknowledged the demise of the nuclear deal in a meeting with Democratic Party constituents, although there was no intention to publicly declare such a position. A recording of that meeting was subsequently disclosed.
