Iraq's cabinet approves plan for largest budget in 20 years

13 March 2023

The Iraqi government has approved a draft budget for three years, which is considered the largest in the last 20 years. This was reported on Monday by Shafaq News, citing a member of the cabinet.

According to him, the ministers approved the draft budget for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025, its total amount was 200 trillion dinars (about $137.6 billion). Not less than 25 trillion dinars (about $17.2 billion) will be allocated for the Kurdish autonomy.

The document, agreed with members of the government, will soon be submitted to the parliament of the republic.

In 2022, the Iraqi authorities did not approve the draft budget, because after the early parliamentary elections, held in October 2021, the legislators could not reach a consensus to form a coalition, form a government and elect a president who was to nominate a candidate for prime minister. The country's new president, Abdul Latif Rashid, was not elected until one year after the early elections, on October 13, 2022. On the same day, a new Iraqi head of government, Mohammed al-Sudani, was also appointed, having formed his cabinet on October 27 last year.
