The governments of Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the timeline for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory until February 18. This was stated in a release issued by the White House on Sunday.
“The agreement between Lebanon and Israel, overseen by the United States, will remain in effect until February 18, 2025,” the statement noted.
It also announced that “the governments of Lebanon, Israel, and the United States will begin discussions regarding the return of Lebanese detainees held after October 7, 2023.”
A 60-day ceasefire agreement initially went into effect on November 27, requiring Israel to fully withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon by January 27.
However, on Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed that the withdrawal would continue beyond this deadline. The extension was attributed to Lebanon's failure to fully meet the terms of the deal, which stipulates that border areas must be handed over to the Lebanese army and that Hezbollah’s armed forces must retreat beyond the Litani River.
