Israeli units depart from Jenin

05 July 2023

Israeli military units have completed their operation and withdrawn from the Palestinian refugee camp of Jenin in the West Bank. This announcement was made by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman in a phone conversation with TASS.

"The units have left the camp in Jenin," stated the IDF spokesman. When asked if the counter-terrorism operation initiated by the Israeli military on Monday night had concluded, he responded affirmatively.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, on Tuesday night, confirmed that the military had successfully neutralized a "terrorist production site" during the two-day operation in Jenin. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the situation, stating that the military's objectives in the city would soon be accomplished, emphasizing that the operation in Jenin was not a singular event. The previous large-scale operation conducted by IDF units in the same Palestinian city occurred on June 19, with the primary objective being the apprehension of wanted individuals.

Late Tuesday night, Israeli forces commenced their withdrawal from the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin. Prior to the withdrawal, it was reported that an Israeli soldier had been killed in a firefight. Following a series of terrorist attacks in Israeli cities, Israeli security services have been conducting counter-terrorism operations and raids in the West Bank since April 10, 2022.

Subsequent to the initiation of the withdrawal of Israeli units from camp Jenin, five rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Wednesday night. The army's press office confirmed that all five launches were intercepted by the air defense system. The military later reported conducting strikes on Hamas military targets within the Palestinian enclave in response to the rocket fire. The army's press office explained, "In response to the rockets fired overnight from the Gaza Strip into Israel, the fighters struck an underground weapons manufacturing facility and a rocket raw material workshop belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip."
