Kazakh citizens residing in Russia will have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan, scheduled for October 6, 2024. The embassy of Kazakhstan in Russia has announced that polling stations will be set up in five cities across the country.
In Moscow, citizens can vote at polling station No. 397, located at the Kazakh Embassy. Additional polling stations will be available at the consulates of Kazakhstan in St. Petersburg, Kazan, Astrakhan, and Omsk. According to the Central Referendum Commission, a total of 10,327 polling stations will be opened, including 78 stations in 63 countries worldwide.
The referendum was called after Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on September 2, 2024. The Central Election Commission will oversee the organization and conduct of the referendum.
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy has identified the village of Ulken in the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region as the most suitable site for the NPP. While several companies are being considered as potential technology suppliers, including China's CNNC, South Korea's KHNP, Russia's Rosatom, and France's EDF, the referendum will not include a decision on the vendor.
