The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has responded positively to the request of the incumbent authorities of Afghanistan to accredit their diplomats in Astana. Aibek Smadiyarov, an official representative of the Kazakh MFA, told a briefing on Monday.
"In response to the request of the new Afghan administration to accredit diplomats, we have taken a positive decision," he said.
Smadiyarov explained that with the fall of the previous government in August 2021, a power vacuum was formed in Afghanistan. "Embassies of Afghanistan abroad have ceased to represent this state. The situation is complicated, but not unique. History knows many examples of power changes in a number of states, which entails the question of the legitimacy of the new authorities," he said.
At the same time, the representative of the foreign ministry pointed out that Kazakhstan stands for a united and prosperous Afghanistan, as the country is going through another difficult stage in its history. "The arrival of the new Afghan administration does not mean recognition. That remains the prerogative of the UN. The same missions are present in a number of countries," Smadiyarov stressed.
He also recalled the words of President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who earlier said that Astana would not leave Afghanistan alone with the current difficulties. "The president emphasized the humanitarian component of our cooperation. For example, 90 percent of the flour consumed in Afghanistan comes from Kazakhstan," the ministry representative added.
In February of this year, the Taliban (banned in Russia) government appointed a new staff at the Afghan consulate general in Istanbul. Earlier, the Taliban appointed new diplomats from among their representatives to the Afghan embassy in Tehran. The Taliban also took control of the Afghan diplomatic missions in Pakistan, Russia and China. At the same time, not a single country has recognized the legitimacy of the provisional government of the country.
