Kazakhstan aims to export agricultural products to Persian Gulf countries via Iran

07 August 2023

Kazakhstan's Minister of Trade and Integration Serik Zhumangarin engaged in discussions concerning the creation of a collaborative venture with Abu Dhabi Ports. The aim of this initiative is to facilitate the export of agricultural goods from Kazakhstan, using Iranian ports as a conduit, to reach the nations situated around the Persian Gulf. This information was communicated through an official statement released by the ministry's press service.

"The potential and future opportunities for establishing a joint venture involving the Kazakh side were deliberated upon during discussions between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumangarin and the head of Simatech Shipping & Forwarding (of which Abu Dhabi Ports is a constituent - TASS)," as stated in the official communication.

The joint venture (JV) is anticipated to oversee "the transportation of agricultural commodities from Kazakhstan, originating at the port of Kuryk, to the Persian Gulf nations using the ports of Amirabad and Bandar Abbas in Iran."

"The newly established route presents unparalleled opportunities for Kazakh exporters, reducing travel time to three days through Iran, granting access to Iranian ports such as Amirabad, Bandar Abbas, Bandar Imam Khomeini, Chabahar, as well as UAE ports like Khalifa and Fujairah. This route further extends to encompass all ports across India, Pakistan, the Far East, and the east coast of Africa," the ministry highlighted.

The formation of the JV will establish the most direct and efficient route for transporting Kazakh export goods to markets in the Persian Gulf, the Middle East, Pakistan, India, and the East African coast, as highlighted by the press release.

Back in April, during Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov's visit to Iran, a pivotal agreement was signed for enhancing transportation connectivity between the ports of Kuryk and Amirabad. Under the terms of these agreements, ongoing efforts are being directed towards the completion of infrastructure development for grain terminals within these ports.
