Kazakhstan is discussing with Azerbaijan possible ways to transport Kazakhstan oil. Dauren Karabayev, Deputy Chairman of the Board for Economics and Finance of Kazakhstan's national company KazMunayGas (KMG), said at a briefing on Thursday.
"Discussions with the Azerbaijani side on the possible transportation of Kazakhstan oil are conducted at various levels, including at the state level and at the level of national companies. Details still need to be agreed upon. We will provide more details when we reach an agreement with the Azerbaijani side," he said.
Karabayev reminded that Azerbaijan has two oil pipelines: Baku - Tbilisi - Ceyhan and Baku - Supsa, "which can be potentially used to transport Kazakhstan oil."
On August 12, Reuters reported that Kazakhstan intends to supply and sell some of its oil bypassing Russia, through the Azerbaijani pipelines. According to the agency's source, KazMunayGas is in preliminary talks with Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR about the supply of oil. As the agency informed, the Kazakh side plans to sell 1.5 million tons of fuel per year through the Azerbaijani pipeline Baku - Tbilisi - Ceyhan. The interlocutor of the agency noted that the parties intend to sign a final contract for the transportation of oil at the end of August, and deliveries will begin in autumn. According to the agency, Kazakhstan also expects to supply 3.5 million tons of oil annually from 2023 through another Azerbaijani pipeline Baku - Supsa, which goes to Georgia.
On the same day, Kazakhstan's Energy Minister Bolat Akchulakov said that his agency does not intend to sign an agreement on oil supplies through Azerbaijani pipelines in the near future, but such a possibility is being discussed.
