The Majilis (lower house of parliament) of Kazakhstan on Wednesday approved the ratification of the treaty with Turkmenistan on the delimitation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border and the delimitation of adjacent areas of fishing zones in the Caspian Sea. The session is being broadcast on the legislative body's website.
The treaty between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan was signed in Ashgabat in October 2021. Its purpose is to determine the state border line between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in the Caspian Sea, delimiting their territorial waters and adjacent areas of fishing zones.
"The adoption of the treaty will eliminate possible preconditions for disputes with Turkmenistan regarding the delimitation of the Caspian Sea bed between our states, increase the investment attractiveness of Kazakhstan's sector of the Caspian Sea bed and provide favorable conditions for exercising sovereign rights to subsoil use and fishing of aquatic biological resources," says the committee in its conclusion.
The treaty will complete the process of delimitation of Kazakhstan's state border on the southern borders and will be the first ever document legally securing state borders on the Caspian Sea between the coastal states.
After approval by the Majilis, the treaty between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan will be submitted to the Senate (upper house of parliament) of Kazakhstan for consideration.
