The Kazakh authorities are negotiating with Russia on the planned import of electricity, Kazakhstan Energy Minister Bolat Akchulakov said at a briefing on Friday.
"Now we are working to negotiate with the Russian Federation on the so-called planned import of electricity. We are negotiating with our Russian colleagues on how much planned imports we should stop at," Akchulakov said. He recalled that last year Kazakhstan covered the deficit of electricity at the expense of overflows from Russia.
Akchulakov also noted that due to the current political and economic situation in the world there is a risk of disruption of repair campaigns of power generating organizations. "Why are we thinking about planned imports from Russia? We have questions today about the possibility of supplying spare parts from Ukrainian factories and [the work of] installation teams from Ukraine - there is an objective problem that we may face," explained the head of the ministry of energy. He also noted that Kazakhstan's thermal power plants were built a long time ago and have a high accident rate.
According to Akchulakov, after the work of the authorities to identify illegal subjects of mining it was possible to return a significant amount of electricity to the country's power system. "Today, the system is balanced, and we do not see a shortage of electricity. We are working in balance," the minister specified.
