This year, personnel from Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (NSC) successfully thwarted an attempt to detonate explosives at a mausoleum in the southern region and prevented an armed attack in the capital city. Deputy Chairman of the agency Ruslan Seisembayev disclosed these achievements during a meeting of the Council of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
"During this period, Kazakhstan has been facing a sustained and elevated terrorist threat. Annually, we manage to thwart at least two terrorist attacks. In this current year alone, we successfully prevented attempts to detonate an improvised explosive device at the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkestan and disrupted an armed attack targeting crowded areas in Astana at an early stage of its planning," Kazinform quoted him as saying.
According to him, the information received by the NSC indicates that the emergence of terrorist threats to the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is influenced by several predominant factors.
The 40th meeting of the Council of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is being held in Astana on Friday.
