King of Jordan Stresses: No True Victory Without the Establishment of a Palestinian State

15 November 2023

In his article for The Washington Post, King Abdullah II of Jordan expressed the opinion that there will be no winners in the current conflict between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas if a Palestinian state is never established

"There will be no winners in the current war. No one will prevail in it unless the Palestinians can realize their rights and establish their state. This, and only this, will be a genuine victory for Palestinians, Israelis, and all of humanity," emphasized the Jordanian monarch.

"Are there any realistic alternatives to the two-state principle? It is hard to imagine even one. If the status quo persists, the immediate future will be shaped by conflicting narratives justifying hatred and further violence. Political ideologies will attempt to exploit religion for their own purposes, and the atmosphere of extremism and the desire for revenge will escalate not only in the region but around the world," stated Abdullah II.

"Not a single hospital or school, not a single building in Gaza is safe. But do not think that Gazans will leave their homes just because they are urged to do so in leaflets or text messages. They know that leaving their homes means losing hope, dignity, and the chance to return to their land. After all, they have witnessed precisely what has happened to their fellow human beings and their ancestors over the past seventy years of this conflict," added the Jordanian king.

The monarch accused Israel of undermining the peace process over the past 20 years but noted that he "cannot help but believe that Palestinians and Israelis want the same thing." "They are not monsters. Neither of them wishes [the other] suffering and death," he asserted.

According to Abdullah II, world leaders should immediately start working to resolve the current conflict. "This work will not be easy, but it is necessary," the king added.
