Kremlin Deems Sanctions Against Iran Unlawful

14 March

Russia considers sanctions against Iran illegal, emphasizing that Tehran has never expressed intentions to acquire nuclear weapons, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists in response to a question about Iran’s nuclear program.

“The Iranian side has never stated any intention to develop nuclear weapons. Therefore, from our perspective, all sanctions and restrictions imposed on Iran are unlawful. Diplomatic efforts must continue to resolve this issue,” Peskov said.

He also confirmed that following the recent talks in Beijing between representatives of Russia, Iran, and China on Iran’s nuclear program, all necessary reports will be submitted to Russian President Vladimir Putin in due time. According to Peskov, efforts are ongoing to find peaceful solutions to Iran’s nuclear dossier.

“We believe our Iranian friends have the right to develop their civilian nuclear energy sector and build an entire industry around it. As you know, Russia actively supports Iran in this regard and continues to assist in these efforts,” he added.

On March 14, Beijing hosted a meeting on the Iranian nuclear issue, chaired by China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu. Russia was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, while Iran’s delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.
