Presidents of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Zhaparov, will oversee the reopening of border crossings between their countries via video link, according to the Kyrgyz president's administration.
"President of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhparov and President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon will observe the border reopening between the two countries today, March 13, via video conference," a government representative stated.
Rahmon is currently on his first official visit to Kyrgyzstan. Following their talks, the two leaders are expected to issue a joint statement and sign a border agreement, along with other bilateral documents.
The Kyrgyz-Tajik border stretches approximately 980 km. Negotiations on its demarcation have been ongoing since December 2002. The lack of a clearly defined border has repeatedly led to conflicts involving both local residents and military personnel, sometimes escalating to armed clashes. The most recent major conflict occurred in early autumn 2022. Since 2014, more than ten significant border conflicts have taken place.
On February 21 of this year, Kamchybek Tashiev, Chairman of Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security (SCNS) and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, met with Saymumin Yatimov, Head of Tajikistan’s SCNS, in Bishkek. The two officials, leading their respective government delegations in border negotiations, signed a protocol on the demarcation of a shared section of the border.
