Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi reaffirmed their mutual interest in strengthening cooperation between Moscow and Kabul in trade, economic, and regional security spheres, the Russian Foreign Ministry said following a phone call between the two diplomats.
“Noting the longstanding traditions of friendship and good neighborliness between the Russian and Afghan peoples, the two sides emphasized their shared interest in expanding cooperation in trade, economic, and humanitarian areas, as well as in strengthening regional security, including countering terrorism and drug trafficking,” the ministry said in a statement.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said Moscow intends to develop economic cooperation with Afghanistan, noting that bilateral trade reached $323 million in 2024.
