Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is set to hold negotiations in Moscow today, March 3, with the Second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Erywan Yusof. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM Moscow time, with a joint press conference expected to follow.
According to the Russian foreign ministry, the diplomats will evaluate the current status and future development of bilateral relations, focusing on a schedule for political contacts and the expansion of practical cooperation.
Global and regional issues will also be a priority on the agenda. The ministers will likely address the sharp escalation of conflict in the Middle East alongside other critical international developments. The Russian diplomatic department also indicated that significant attention will be directed toward collaboration within the framework of the Russia-ASEAN dialogue partnership.
Strategic Areas of Cooperation
The relationship between Moscow and Bandar Seri Begawan is built on a long-standing tradition of friendship and consistent political dialogue. High-level consultations previously took place in 2024 during the East Asia Summit in Vientiane, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to progressive cooperation. Russia has identified Brunei as a steadfast and reliable partner within the Asia-Pacific region.
Today’s discussions are expected to touch upon energy, investment, and security cooperation. This push for closer military-to-military ties was recently highlighted by the official visit of the Russian corvette Gremyashchiy to Brunei in December 2025. During that visit, the crew engaged in protocol activities with the Royal Brunei Navy to foster professional and friendly relations.
Economic ties also continue to expand, supported by an existing visa-free regime for short-term visits. Humanitarian and cultural exchanges remain a vital part of the partnership, with Bruneian students studying in Russian universities through government quotas and both nations benefiting from spiritual exchanges rooted in shared Islamic traditions.
