Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan during the latter’s working visit to Moscow from May 25 to 27. High on the agenda will be discussions on the situation in Ukraine, including its root causes, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
Zakharova noted that Lavrov’s meetings consistently include the Ukraine issue, no matter the partner country. The ministers will also address broader regional topics including developments in Syria, Libya, the South Caucasus, and the Black Sea region. Economic cooperation and upcoming high-level bilateral meetings will also be discussed.
The visit follows recent Russia-Ukraine talks held in Istanbul on May 16, where both sides agreed to a prisoner exchange ("1,000 for 1,000") and to continue working toward a detailed ceasefire proposal. Russia’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, said Moscow was satisfied with the results of the talks.
The meeting coincides with the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum, taking place from May 19–21, under the theme “Law: Lessons from the Past for the World of the Future.” Established in 2011, the forum is supported by the Russian president and organized by the Ministry of Justice and Roscongress.
